Twinity maps really a problem, how to link CQI and Work Foundation? #mtw3

I notice the blog update from will789 on Posterous. He is trying to widen the link between Deming idea and Network Learning.

This could be a lot easier if the maps came back to Twinity. I know the London space got close to the CQI, at least as far as Cursitor Street. The walk towards the Work Foundations was covered pretty well. Conversation along the route could have been interesting.

Is it the Ordnance Survey who need a budget consideration for the full resource to be restored? They must know something about London. I think that more real maps would be bought if there were more people who knew about Twinity. Maybe this could be a topic for #mtw3?

YouTube extend Burgoyne lecture from Suffolk Campus, more on social media

This #mtw3 event is gaining a bit of momentum. John Burgoyne spoke in Suffolk last month and the talk is on YouTube as sound and slides. So far it is not public but you can find the links on the Suffolk webpage. Keep scrolling to the bottom.

I have been sent the slides and a note so have loaded these to Scribd. Please click HERE I added a note promoting this blog which I think I should have done with the Grove Journal. So far we have the John Burgoyne opening keynote as a journal article and a YouTube clip, well over an hour with questions. And it seems the rest of the shape of the event comes from the company this is found in.

For example I am interested in the John Peters lecture about trust. This has led me to GSE Research and a LinkedIn group discussion on journals. So far the Grove Journal is free to download from Scribd but what is the business model going forward? As an avatar I worry about these things. Twinity has stopped all the spaces between dwellings as part of an austerity measure, something about the costs of renting map information. Life is still possible, but this is not a viable future.

LinkedIn has suggested I join the group for the British Academy of Management. I find they are discussing social media. Click HERE for link. So this is encouraging for the online phase of this event. September is a long way off for a face-to-face. Much could happen sooner.

The social media phase of the third Management Theory at Work event is reaching a new stage. A Google search earlier today found the first few results were all to do with #mtw3 or Management Theory at Work 3.

By permission the PDF of the first Grove Journal has been posted on Scribd so can be read online. John Burgoyne's article can be seen as a basis for a keynote at a conference. The other articles consider online learning and environmental resiliance. Articles will be considered for the next publication so some may come from the discussions around #mtw3.

Checking out YouTube for CMS and Dynamic Capability #mtw3

I have been thinking about the social media phases of #mtw3 , both round about now and possibilities with a bit more production during or after the face-to-face. YouTube is interesting as public space. Apparently it is in the top five search engines as in where most people go.

But it is not reflecting what the #mtw3 interests seem to be. Searching on "Critical Management Studies" (CMS) finds one major result.

habitat62 has also loaded another prize event for the Dark Side.

So CMS is on YouTube but there are no comments so far and not much else relevant that crops up alongside.

The Tent City University approach is much easier to access.

It links immediately to lots of other stuff in lots of other places.

Here also is some BBC balance

so Tent City connects with a wider public.

Similarly a search on Dynamic Capabilities finds only one suitable result

It turns out to include a significant proportion on the benefits of courses at Cranfield. YouTube works best with conversation so this may develop if related videos are posted.

"Learning Organisation" still gets loads of results. Peter Senge is around no 20, behind Jack Welch.

So it could be that practitioners or the people who use YouTube are still with ideas from the first MTW. The academics have taken a turn or two but they are not widely followed.

Twinity connected to Tent City University

A blog by Will Pollard links to a YouTube video with photos from Tent City near St Pauls and Exeter cathedral. There could be more experiments later. St Pauls is interesting as part of central London where Twinityb is possible. So far not many UK universities are inside the scope.

Trends on search for Learning Organisation and Dynamic Capabilities

I have done some searches on both "learning organisation" and "dynamic capabilities". I think one explanation for why academics and practitioners do not often attend the same events could be language. Of course there are differences in what different words describe, but fist look at the charts.

In books, "learning organisations" peaked roughly at the time of the first conferences. "Dynamic capablities" has grown steadily and now shows in more new titles.

But for trends on searches there is no obvious awareness of "dynamic capabilites". Interest in learning organisations is declining but continues.

So there would be a point to exploring the connections between the two topics and presenting dynamic capabiliktes for a wider audience.

Management Theory at Work Three announced at Critical Management

My colleague willpollard has posted an announcement at Critical Management

Currently a LinkedIn group to develop the structure, the idea is to continue a sequence of conferences from about ten years ago. My own take is that the first MTW went a bit off course with the closing keynote from Chris Grey. He persuaded the academic part of the audience that universities have a better basis in critique than in claiming to offer effective practice. So the idea of mixing academics and practitioners did not continue. There was also a turn from learning organisations to leadership which again I think was unfortunate. Of course organisations need leadership but charisma is in a context.
Critique is included in the current scope and comment is welcome. There may be a face to face event in late 2012 but the online aspect is expected to continue.

Collage from Twinity - Tent City and Exeter

Based in Twinity I sometimes find it hard to communicate with people who don't have much bandwidth or experience in virtual worlds. This blog may work as a link. Another problem it could solve is that Twinity is limited to a few large cities. I recently visited Exeter where there is a camp at the cathedral. So this is where the sign comes from. Over the next few weeks I may continue linking Exeter and the St Pauls site on Twinity.

By the way, the version of inside St Pauls is well worth a visit.

Any sort of conversation in any location can have a related version in Twinity.

Work Foundation could be a venue for conference face to face

I recently went to visit the Work Foundation, now linked to Lancaster University. This could be a venue for a new conference if it ever arrives as face to face. It could still work ok online for a while.

Conference streams to form a triangle

After the keynotes the streams will be in three spaces arranged along the lines of this diagram. Possibly not in this exact layout. It will be possible to move between the spaces. The closing plenary will be in a joint space but it will be possible to remain in another space.

The photos on the wall are from Lancaster Campus where I still work sometimes. There is a cafe at InfoLab 21 where technology can be an inspiration.

Near the Management building is a tree and in summer this is a good spot for reflection.

I often walk past the central square as far as where the Institute for Advanced Studies used to be. It still has a room and thisw is still a good cafe. The square is a bit of a puzzle at the moment. The Learning Zone is impressive but Waterstones no longer stock any electronic reader device so appear just interested in hard copy.
